Couture Dressmaking: An Introduction
A conversation about the couture clothing and what defines it.
By definition couture clothing is made to measurement garments by hand from start to finish. Haute Couture is typically what you see on the run ways. Exclusive designs made from high end, one of a kind materials and printed fabrics that are signature to a particular designer. We are happy to call ourselves couture because this very process is the way we believe high end clothing should be made.

Couture is made with attention to detail and by some of the most capable and experienced sewers. Often the sewing techniques used for couture sewing are difficult and of an expert level. In French, couture translates to ‘dressmaking’.
The benefits of couture are simple to spot. You get one of a kind designs made to your exact measurements for you to wear. More often than not you are the only one if not one of a select few who own that style of garment from a designer. Couture pieces are more expensive because they are made by hand from the very beginning and include intricate detailing as well as craftsman sewing.

In our studio we start with the our client. When she has chosen an original design or if having a custom piece made for her, we begin with her measurements and the drafting process. This takes a few fittings to try the design out with our trial run pieces made from muslin. Once the fit and design are perfected, Jessica constructs the design by hand. We make all of our own patterns in house and ship in some of the finest silks and fabrics from around the world to make our couture pieces.

Couture is most definitely an investment. But, what comes with this is a one of kind piece made especially for you that you can pass down as a family heirloom one day.
